ÖGBMT Generalversammlung – Rückblick
Die Generalversammlung hat am Freitag, 25. Oktober 2024, um 13:00 Uhr während der diesjährigen ÖGBMT Jahrestagung an der TU Graz stattgefunden. Neben den Berichten aus dem Vereinsleben und der Abstimmung über eine Anpassung der Mitgliedsbeiträge (genaue Informationen folgen in Kürze) gab es in diesem Jahr vor allem einen Höhepunkt: Die Verleihung der Ehrenmitgliedschaft an Dr. Gerhard Windischbauer und Dr. Norbert Rozsenich. Nachdem diese einstimmig beschlossen worden war, erfolgte die Übergabe der Urkunde im Rahmen einer sehr vergnüglichen Buschenschankfahrt. Herr Dr. Rozsenich konnte in Begleitung seiner Frau an dem Ausflug teilnehmen und Urkunde und Laudatio – gehalten von Dr. Hermann Gilly – persönlich in Empfang nehmen. Mit sehr launigen und interessanten Ausführungen bedankte sich das sichtlich gerührte Ehrenmitglied für die Auszeichnung.
Herr Dr. Windischbauer war leider verhindert und wird seine Ehrung zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt überreicht bekommen.

ÖGBMT Jahrestagung 2024 – Rückblick und Dank

Vielen Dank an alle, die dieses Jahr an der Jahrestagung der ÖGBMT teilgenommen haben! Mit 105 registrierten Telnehmenden war es eine inspirierende Veranstaltung mit drei großartigen Keynotes: Martin Manninger-Wünscher über „Brückenbildung zur Schließung der Translational Gap in der Kardiologie“, Michele Giugliano über „Cortical Neuronal Ensembles“ und Ina Koch über „Computermodellierung auf molekularer und zellulärer Ebene mithilfe von Petri-Netzen“. Das Programm umfasste vier spannende Sessions zu kardiovaskulärer Analyse und maschinellem Lernen, Neurowissenschaften, bioinformatischen Ansätzen und Innovationen in der biomedizinischen Signalverarbeitung und Bildgebung. Ein Highlight in diesem Jahr war das neue Format der Start-up-Sitzung, bei der die Start-up-Welt aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchtet wurde und nicht nur Erfolgsgeschichten, sondern auch wertvolle Einblicke in Herausforderungen und Misserfolge geboten wurden. Wir konnten akademische Exzellenz mit drei Preisen für Abschlussarbeiten würdigen – herzlichen Glückwunsch an Celine Desoyer (Bachelor), Christopher Alexander Ramirez Bedoya (Master) und Malte Rolf-Pissarczyk (PhD)! Unser besonderer Dank gilt unseren Sponsoren, deren großzügige Unterstützung diese Konferenz ermöglicht hat. Und natürlich ein herzliches Dankeschön an Sie alle – unsere Teilehmenden – Ihr Enthusiasmus und Ihre Beiträge haben diese Veranstaltung zu einem Erfolg gemacht.

Stefan Schuy-Preis 2024 – Der Gewinner kommt aus Graz
Wir gratulieren Herrn DI Clemens Stilianu herzlich zu seiner ausgezeichneten Arbeit „Enhanced and robust contrast in CEST MRI: Saturation pulse shape design via optimal control“, die mit dem heurigen Stefan Schuy-Preis belohnt wurde. Herrn Stilianus Vortrag über das prämierte Thema und die Übergabe des Preises durch den Vorsitzenden der Jury, Prof. Gernot Müller-Putz, fanden unter großem Applaus am Donnerstag, 24. Oktober 2024 um 17:30 Uhr im Rahmen der diesjährigen ÖGBMT Jahrestagung statt.

Der Vorstand stellt sich vor
An dieser Stelle wollen wir Ihnen in den kommenden Monaten die Mitglieder des ÖGBMT-Vorstandes etwas näher vorstellen.
ao.Univ.-Prof. DI Dr. Dietmar Rafolt (kooptiertes ÖGBMT Vorstandsmitglied und Arbeitsgruppenleiter)
Dietmar Rafolt wurde 1959 in Vorarlberg geboren und absolvierte die HTL Bregenz und die TU-Graz (Nachrichtentechnik und Elektronik). Anschließend war er Vertragsassistent am Institut für Physiologie der Medizinischen Univ. Graz bei Univ.-Prof. Thomas Kenner, einem der Mitbegründer der ÖGBMT. In seiner Dissertation entwickelte er Messtechnik und Smart Textile für life-science Weltraumexperimente im Bereich Herzkreislauf und Neurophysiologie auf der Raumstation MIR.
1992 wechselte er an die Medizinische Universität Wien und habilitierte 2005 für das gesamte Gebiet der Biomedizinischen Technik. Durch die Nähe zu den MUW-Kliniken am AKH ist Prof. Rafolt in einem multidisziplinären Team in viele Kooperationsprojekte eingebunden. Sein Forschungsinteresse liegt bei Sensortechnologien, Analogdesign, Biomechanik, FES, TMS, haptischen Feedbacksystemen, Elektrophysiologie, Biotelemetrie, Beatmung sowie Teststandentwicklungen.
2017 war er Mitgründer der Startup Firma Edera-Safety GmbH&CoKG. Edera-Safety ist ein Designbüro und entwickelte unter anderem Wirbelsäulenprotektoren für Sport und Arbeit. 2019 war er Gründungsgesellschafter von Rehabuddy GmbH, ein MUW-Spin off ehemaliger Mitarbeiter. Aktuell beschäftigt sich Dr. Rafolt mit der Optimierung von Beatmungsstrategien bei Frühgeborenen und unterstützt das FFG Fellowship Projekt SVAN (intraossärer Zugang) ebenfalls bei Frühgeborenen.
Bei der ÖGBMT ist er kooptiertes Mitglied im Vorstand und leitet die Arbeitsgruppe Startups.

ÖGBMT General Assembly – Review
The General Assembly took place on Friday, 25 October 2024 at 13:00 during this year’s ÖGBMT Annual Conference at TU Graz. In addition to the reports on the life of the association and the vote on an adjustment of the membership fees (exact information will follow shortly), there was one highlight in particular this year: the awarding of honorary membership to Dr Gerhard Windischbauer and Dr Norbert Rozsenich. After this was unanimously approved, the certificate was presented during a very enjoyable wine tavern trip. Dr Rozsenich, accompanied by his wife, was able to take part in the excursion and receive the certificate and laudatory speech – delivered by Dr Hermann Gilly – in person. The visibly moved honorary member thanked for the award with a very witty and interesting speech.
Dr Windischbauer was unfortunately unable to attend and will be presented with his award at a later date.

ÖGBMT Annual Conference 2024 – Review and Thanks

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the annual meeting of the ÖGBMT this year! With 105 registered participants, it was an inspiring event featuring three amazing keynote speakers: Martin Manninger-Wünscher on Bridging the Translational Gap in Cardiology, Michele Giugliano on Cortical Neuronal Ensembles, and Ina Koch on Computational Modeling at the Molecular and Cellular Level Using Petri Nets. The program included four engaging sessions on advanced cardiovascular analysis and machine learning, neuroscience, bioinformatics approaches and biomedical signal processing and imaging innovations. A highlight this year was the new format of the start-up session, which explored the start-up world from different perspectives, including not only stories of success but also valuable insights into challenges and failures. We celebrated academic excellence with three thesis awards — congratulations to Celine Desoyer (Bachelor), Christopher Alexander Ramirez Bedoya (Master), and Malte Rolf-Pissarczyk (PhD)! We owe special thanks to our sponsors, whose generous support made this conference possible. And of course, a heartfelt thank you to all of you — our participants — your enthusiasm and contributions made this event a success.

Stefan Schuy Prize 2024 – The winner comes from Graz
We would like to congratulate Mr Clemens Stilianu on his excellent work ‘Enhanced and robust contrast in CEST MRI: Saturation pulse shape design via optimal control’, which was awarded this year’s Stefan Schuy Prize. Mr Stilianu’s lecture on the award-winning topic and the presentation of the prize by the chairman of the jury, Prof. Gernot Müller-Putz, took place to great applause on Thursday, 24 October 2024 at 17:30 during this year’s ÖGBMT Annual Conference.

The Executive Board Introduces Itself
In the coming months, we would like to introduce you to the members of the ÖGBMT Board in more detail.
Associate Professor Dr Dietmar Rafolt(co-opted ÖGBMT board member and working group leader)
Dietmar Rafolt was born in Vorarlberg in 1959 and graduated from the HTL Bregenz and the TU Graz (communications engineering and electronics). He then worked as a contract assistant at the Institute of Physiology at the Medical University of Graz under Prof. Thomas Kenner, one of the co-founders of the ÖGBMT. In his dissertation, he developed measurement technology and smart textiles for life-science space experiments in the field of cardiovascular and neurophysiology on the MIR space station.
In 1992, he moved to the Medical University of Vienna and habilitated in 2005 in the entire field of biomedical engineering. Due to his proximity to the MUW clinics at Vienna General Hospital, Prof Rafolt is involved in many collaborative projects as part of a multidisciplinary team. His research interests include sensor technologies, analogue design, biomechanics, FES, TMS, haptic feedback systems, electrophysiology, biotelemetry, ventilation and test stand development.
In 2017, he co-founded the start-up company Edera-Safety GmbH&CoKG. Edera-Safety is a design office and has developed spinal protectors for sports and work, among other things. In 2019, he was a founding partner of Rehabuddy GmbH, an MUW spin-off of former employees. Dr Rafolt is currently working on the optimisation of ventilation strategies for premature babies and is also supporting the FFG Fellowship project SVAN (intraosseous access) for premature babies.
Dietmar Rafolt is a co-opted member of the ÖGBMT board and heads the Startups working group.
