AG Regulatory Affairs

Wie im letzten halben Jahr intensiv und bei der Jahrestagung in Innsbruck auch in einer eigenen Sitzung diskutiert, hat die geplante Neufassung der Medical Device Regulation große Fragezeichen hinsichtlich der Behandlung von Klinischen Studien der Grundlagen- und Frühphasen-Forschung ausgelöst. Biomedical Engineering / Biomedizinische Technik: Call for Associate Editor

Biomedical Engineering / Biomedizinische Technik (https://www.degruyterbrill.com/de/journal/key/bmte/), die gemeinsame Zeitschrift der Deutschen, Österreichischen und Schweizerischen Gesellschaften für Biomedizinische Technik, sucht aktuell eine/einen Associate Editor, um das Redaktionsteam der Zeitschrift zu verstärken.
Ideale Kandidatinnen/Kandidaten sind aktiv in der Forschung tätig, verfügen über umfangreiche Erfahrung als Gutachter für wissenschaftliche Publikationen mit Peer-Review und können das erforderliche Maß an Fachkompetenz und Engagement nachweisen. Sie sollten darüber hinaus über Erfahrungen im klinischen Umfeld und mit klinischen Studien verfügen.
Associate Editors sind für die Bearbeitung eingereichter Manuskripte in ihrem Fachgebiet sowie für die Leitung des Peer-Review-Prozesses verantwortlich.

IFESS Jahrestagung 2026

Die IFESS-Jahreskonferenz 2026 brachte vom 2. bis 4. September am Politecnico di Milano in Lecco über 170 internationale Expert:innen zusammen. Unter dem Motto „Vom Labor ins Leben“ standen neue Technologien der elektrischen Stimulation, Neuroplastizität und Wohlbefinden im Mittelpunkt. Zu den Hauptredner:innen zählten Milos Popovic, Silvestro Micera, Monica Perez und Aleksandra Vuckovic.

Deutlich wurde der Wandel der funktionellen Elektrostimulation (FES): Sie entwickelt sich von einer rein kompensatorischen Unterstützung zu einer Therapie, die langfristige Veränderungen im Nervensystem anstoßen soll. Diskutiert wurden hybride Ansätze, die FES mit Gehirn-Computer-Schnittstellen, Exoskeletten, Virtual Reality und Rehabilitationsrobotik verbinden. Intelligente Sensoren ermöglichen zudem geschlossene Regelkreise, welche Stimulationsparameter in Echtzeit individuell anpassen. FES gewinnt außerdem für Atemfunktion, Herz-Kreislauf-Fitness sowie Darm- und Blasenmanagement an Bedeutung.

Ein Höhepunkt war das Cybersportday-FES-Radrennen, koordiniert von Martin Schmoll (MedUni Wien) und der ÖGBMT-Gruppe für FES und Bewegungsrehabilitation. Sieben Fahrer aus fünf Ländern absolvierten bei 33 °C ein 400-Meter-Rennen (Offizielle Ergebnisse: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7506609586456383488).

Mitglieder des Organisationsteams des alle drei Jahre stattfindenden „Vienna International Workshop on Functional Electrical Stimulation“ (viennaFES, ÖGBMT FES und Movement Rehabilitation Group) nutzten die Konferenz zudem für erste Abstimmungen mit dem IFESS-Vorstand zur nächsten Ausgabe 2028.

10th Graz Brain-Computer Interface Conference 2026

Die 10th Graz Brain-Computer Interface Conference 2026 brachte 190 Teilnehmer:innen aus 23 Ländern zusammen. Mit mehr als 100 wissenschaftlichen Beiträgen in Form von Vorträgen und Postern sowie fünf Keynotes bot die Konferenz ein vielseitiges Forum für aktuelle Entwicklungen der Brain Computer Interfaces.
Ein besonderer Höhepunkt war die Keynote von Vorstandsmitglied und Conference Chair Gernot Müller-Putz, der die vor 24 Jahren gegründete BCI-Konferenz mitinitiierte. In seinem Rückblick zeichnete er die Entwicklung von 35 Jahren BCI-Forschung nach und zeigte, wie sich das Feld von frühen Grundlagenarbeiten zu klinischen und alltagsnahen Anwendungen entwickelt hat.

Rückblick Medicon 2026 – XVII Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing

Im Rahmen der MEDICON Konferenz in Siena fand ein gemeinsames Meeting des IFMBE Council of Societies und der EAMBES statt, an dem Prof. Daniel Baumgarten als Vertreter der ÖGBMT teilnahm. Neben aktuellen Berichten der regionalen Representatives sowie der Komitees und Arbeitsgruppen wurden u.a. Aktivitäten in Bezug auf die regulatorischen Rahmenbedingungen und die Anerkennung der Biomedizinischen Technik als Gesundheitsberuf diskutiert – zwei wichtige Themen, die auch die ÖGBMT auf ihrer Agenda hat.

Regulatory Affairs Working Group

As has been discussed at length over the past six months – and in a dedicated session at the annual conference in Innsbruck – the planned revision of the Medical Devices Regulation has raised significant questions regarding the treatment of clinical trials in basic and early-phase research. Our Regulatory Affairs Working Group (led by H. Biomedical Engineering / Biomedizinische Technik: Call for Associate Editor

Biomedical Engineering / Biomedizinische Technik (https://www.degruyterbrill.com/de/journal/key/bmte/), the joint journal of the German, Austrian and Swiss Societies for Biomedical Engineering, is currently seeking an Associate Editor to strengthen the journal’s editorial team.
Ideal candidates are actively engaged in research, have extensive experience as reviewers of peer-reviewed scientific publications, and can demonstrate the necessary level of expertise and commitment. They should also have experience in a clinical setting and with clinical trials.
Associate Editors are responsible for handling submitted manuscripts in their field of expertise and for overseeing the peer-review process.

IFESS Jahrestagung 2026
Date: 2.-4. September 2026

The IFESS Annual Conference 2026 brought together more than 170 international experts at the Politecnico di Milano in Lecco from September 2 to 4. Under the theme “From the Lab to Life,” the conference focused on emerging technologies in electrical stimulation, neuroplasticity, and well-being. Keynote speakers included Milos Popovic, Silvestro Micera, Monica Perez, and Aleksandra Vuckovic.

The conference highlighted a clear shift in functional electrical stimulation (FES): it is evolving from purely compensatory support into a therapy intended to trigger long-term changes in the nervous system. Participants discussed hybrid approaches combining FES with brain–computer interfaces, exoskeletons, virtual reality, and rehabilitation robotics. Intelligent sensors also enable closed-loop systems that tailor stimulation parameters to individuals in real time. FES is also gaining importance for respiratory function, cardiovascular fitness, and bowel and bladder management.
A highlight was the Cybersportday FES cycling race, coordinated by Martin Schmoll (Medical University of Vienna) and the ÖGBMT Functional Electrical Stimulation and Movement Rehabilitation Group. Members of the organising team for the triennial “Vienna International Workshop on Functional Electrical Stimulation” (viennaFES, ÖGBMT FES and Movement Rehabilitation Group) also used the conference for initial discussions with the IFESS Board about the next edition in 2028.

10th Graz Brain-Computer Interface Conference 2026

The 10th Graz Brain-Computer Interface Conference 2026 brought together 190 participants from 23 countries. With more than 100 scientific contributions in the form of talks and posters, as well as five keynote lectures, the conference provided a diverse forum for current developments in brain-computer interfaces.
A particular highlight was the keynote by board member and Conference Chair Gernot Müller-Putz, who co-initiated the BCI Conference 24 years ago. In his retrospective, he traced 35 years of BCI research and showed how the field has evolved from early foundational work to clinical and everyday applications.

As part of the MEDICON conference in Siena, a joint meeting of the IFMBE Council of Societies and EAMBES took place, in which Prof. Daniel Baumgarten participated as a representative of the ÖGBMT. In addition to updates from the regional representatives, committees and working groups, discussions centred on, amongst other things, activities relating to the regulatory framework and the recognition of biomedical engineering as a healthcare profession – two key issues that are also on the ÖGBMT’s agenda.
